Multitech Systems (MT5634ZBA-115V)

October 11, 2009

Q:
Our existing modem has died and we are in the market to purchase another. I wanted to confirm that there are no issues running ActiveFax with a Multitech Systems (MT5634ZBA-115V) Analog Modem before making the purchase.

A:
We have made good experience with Multitech ZBA modems, so such a modem would be a good choice.

Magic Jack

October 11, 2009

Q:
Hello I have downloaded your program and I am going to try it out. I have a Magic Jack phone line for my fax and other programs have a hard time with this. Are there any setting that I need to change to make sure it will work smoothly? I have sent some test pages and sometimes it works ok and other times it has to be sent two or three times before it comes through all the way. I don’t have problems sending, only receiving. Thanks, I hope that the program works for my needs I have hard great things about the software.

A:
The main problem in that case is that this is a VoIP based line which is always problematic when used for faxing because of the tight timing requirements of the fax protocol. What you can try to do is to limit the
baud rate to 9,600 bps in the menu Communication / Modem / Modify / Extended on the fax server.

Robotics Modem

September 4, 2009

Q:
Hi, I’ve installed activefax to one on my customers; he has a us robotics Professional Message Modem wich has the features to receive fax-messages when the pc is powered off; the modem works fine when the pc and activefax are running; when the pc is powered off, the modem correctly receive and store the fax-messages in itself, but then when i switch on the pc with activefax server i’m not able to deploy the fax messages from the modem storage to activefax; is there a way to fix it?

A:
I’m sorry, but receiving faxes with the fax server PC turned off is not supported by ActiveFax, so you always need to have the fax server PC running to receive faxes with ActiveFax.

COM3/COM4

August 26, 2009

Q:
I HAVE TWO LINES ONE IS ON COM 3 AND THE OTHER IS COM4. THEY BOTH ALREADY HAD THESE SETTING U RECOMMENDED. I HAD A PROVIDER CALL 10 TIMES AND LINES WERE NOT BUSY IT JUST KEPT RINGING AND RINGING AND FINALLY ABOUT THE 11TH TRY IT CAME THROUGH.

A:
If incoming calls are not automatically answered after the first ring, you should make sure that the number of rings is configured to 1 in the menu Communication / Modem / Modify and that the option “Enable incoming calls (Receive)” is enabled there. You can also monitor if the modem received the incoming call when you click on the modem icon (i.e. Modem on COM03) and change to the Modem Protocol tab there. When there is an incoming call reported by the modem, a RING signal is displayed there.

Multiple Modems

August 26, 2009

Q:
I am having trouble with the use of 2 modems in one machine I have setup. (In fact I have tried this on 2 machines now and both give me the same results). One modem appears to work fine, and the other I seem to get a couple of different errors. I have also tried with another modem.

These are the errors
‘An unknown error 317 has occurred. Please restart your machine…….’
The other error is
‘The serial interface cannot be opened. Maybe the interface is
already in use by another application.’

I have no other applications in use.

A:
Using multiple fax modems with ActiveFax would be no problem. If multiple internal fax modems do not work, this normally is a driver related problem (you typically get error code 317 in that case). When using multiple
lines, I recommend to rather use a single multi modem board instead of separate fax modems.

Trufax board with Windows 2008

July 27, 2009

Q:
We are looking to use a Brooktrout Trufax board with Windows SBS 2008 as well. Have drivers been released since your original posting? Thank you!

A:
When using a Trufax board with Windows 2008, take care to use the new RoHS-compliant Trufax board, since old Trufax boards do not support Windows 2008. The drivers for such boards are available at http://www.activefax-distribution.com/e_download.php

ISDN adapter in a different machine

July 26, 2009

Q:
I would like to know if Active fax can run using an ISDN network adapter located in a different machine. This particular scenario is of interest as I want to consolidate servers and as such, p2v the activefax server machine.

A:
The ISDN board always needs to be locally installed in the same machine where the fax server is installed. Running the fax server and the ISDN board in two different machines is not possible. In general, I would
recommend to not run the fax server on a virtual machine, since the fax protocol is an analog protocol and timing of that protocol is very critical, so normally you do not get reliable connections when using a
virtual machine.

COM error

July 2, 2009

Q:
Error Description : The serial interface cannot be opened. Maybe the
interface is already in use by another application.
Suggested Solution : Try to find out which application is using the
interface and terminate it.

A:
If there is no other application running that could have access to the modem, I recommend to check the Windows RAS service. This service often connects to all available modems, so I recommend to disable the RAS service if you do not need it. It would also be interesting to see if it works to connect to the modems COM port through Hyperterminal or if you get the same error. What you can also try to do is to check if this only happens when the modem is used in combination with other modems.

Transmission Errors with ActiveFax 3.61

June 2, 2009

Q:
We are running Active Fax 3.61 with an Agere USB 2.0 external modem.

We have read and implemented the settings at http://activefax.wordpress.com/2007/12/01activefax-transmission-errors.

Despite this we continue to get frequent transmission errors, incoming where the page 1/4 or 1/3 complete simply cuts off.

Often there is no associated error code. Sometimes it simply says Connection Has Been Terminated. Sometimes we see Transmission Error (Code 90 = Unspecified Receive Phase C error) or Transmission Error (Code 70 = Unspecified Receive Phase B error) or Transmission Error (Code 91 = Missing EOL after 5 seconds) but these seem only somewhat correlated with pages being cut off.

Other times in outgoing faxes, a fax will be sent twice or many more; we see it as unsent while the recipient will get the fax over and over. This one may be associated with Transmission Error (Code 54 = No response to EOP repeated 3 times).

Having bought a new modem, upgraded software and checked the settings, we were wondering what else might prevent these problems. Is there perhaps a modem that is more compatible with your software than the one we’re using? Or perhaps there’s some other tweek?

Thank you for any help or any suggestions you might be able to give.

A:
Since version 3.61 is quite an old version, I would recommend to update to the latest ActiveFax version 4.18 -> free download at http://www.activefax-distribution.com/e_download.php

In general, the Multitech Multimodem ZBA would be a good choice for an external analog fax modem (see http://www.multitech.com/PRODUCTS/Families/MultiModemZBA).
