ISDN adapter in a different machine

July 26, 2009

Q:
I would like to know if Active fax can run using an ISDN network adapter located in a different machine. This particular scenario is of interest as I want to consolidate servers and as such, p2v the activefax server machine.

A:
The ISDN board always needs to be locally installed in the same machine where the fax server is installed. Running the fax server and the ISDN board in two different machines is not possible. In general, I would
recommend to not run the fax server on a virtual machine, since the fax protocol is an analog protocol and timing of that protocol is very critical, so normally you do not get reliable connections when using a
virtual machine.

When sending faxes with an ISDN board, the error code 349c (invalid format of the number) occurs.

December 1, 2007

This error code means, that either the dialed number or the extension number (MSN) of the calling party is not correct. This error usually has one of the following reasons:

There is no or an illegal extension number (MSN) configured for the ISDN board or the user. Make sure that you have configured at least one valid extension number in the MSN field with the menu Communication / Modem / Modify.
Some PBX (phone systems) do not accept calls when the extension number (MSN) of the calling party is set. You can disable this with the menu Communication / Modem / Modify / Port Settings / Extended Settings when you enable the individual settings for the controller and choose the option “Use fixed MSN for this controller” with an empty MSN field (remove the 0).
There is a special code (usually 0) required to get an outside line, but that code is missing. You can check this with the menu Communication / Modem / Modify with the field Use Dial Prefix for Outgoing Calls

When sending faxes with AVM ISDN boards, the transmission error 3316 (no data available) occurs.

December 1, 2007

This error could happen when using new CAPI drivers with an ActiveFax version older than version 3.85, build 0192. The problem can be solved with an update to the latest ActiveFax version.

ActiveFax: recommended modems & boards

December 1, 2007

ActiveFax can be used with the following types of modems, ISDN boards and fax boards:

Fax modems that support fax class 1, 2 or 2.0
ISDN boards that support the T.30 (Fax Group 3) protocol
Diva Server boards from Eicon
Fax boards from Brooktrout
Fax boards from Intel/Dialogic (Cpi series)
VoIP/FoIP (Voice over IP/Fax over IP)
Avoid low-cost modems
In general, we recommend to avoid using low-cost modems for faxing, since such modems are usually only tested for data and Internet connections and do not work very reliable in fax mode. Since a modem has do establish connections to hundrets of different fax machines, using low-cost modems often causes problems when connections to certain types of fax machines cannot be done.

We recommend the following modems, ISDN boards and fax boards to be used with ActiveFax:
Analog Modems
Aztech 56k Turbo 2
Diamond Supra Express 56e Pro

Saphir III Multilink ISDN-ATM Adapter

December 1, 2007

Q:
I have a problem with the card Saphir III Multilink ISDN-atm adapter when I had version DEMO of the card the protocol t.30 was ok when instead I have bought KEY of saphir t.30 I have error 2006 not resources available for fax (protocol t.30)

A:
You need to take care to use the latest CAPI driver for that ISDN board and if the board also includes a software license that the fax protocol (T.30) is enabled for the board. When the T.30 protocol is not activated or supported, the ISDN board cannot be used for faxing with ActiveFax.
