EMail subject and attachment names

July 21, 2008

Q:
We use your Active Fax software with  several of our clients.  I am wondering,  how can I change the  subject-name and attachment-name of outbound emails sent from Active Fax?

A:
The attachment name can be changed either in the menu Communication / E-Mail / Options or with the data field @F602. The subject can be changed directly in the fax dialog window through the Subject field or with the data field @F307.

Automatic setup for clients

July 17, 2008

Q:
I have been using ActiveFax for a long time now, and it gives me great joy every day. But it is a bit of a job of keaping the clients up to date. Is it possible to create an MSI installation package of the ActiveFax Client?

A:
An MSI setup is currently not available, but it would be possible to run the setup with command line parameters to automatically install the fax client:

To automatically run the ActiveFax Setup unattended it would be possible to start the setup  program with command line parameters. A list of all available command line parameters can be displayed with the command actfax_setup_en.exe -help. For example to automatically install the fax client without automatic startup, use the following command:

* actfax_setup_en.exe -Auto -Client -NoStartup

To automatically install the fax server, use a command like the following:

* actfax_setup_en.exe -Auto -Server -Key 00000-00000

If you are using an ActiveFax version older than version 4.10, you first have to open the setup file actfax_setup_en.exe with Winzip and extract the setup files to a new directory (the file actfax_setup_en.exe can be treated like a normal ZIP file). To run the setup with command line parameters, start setup.exe from the extracted directory instead of actfax_setup_en.exe then.

ActiveFax Archives stopped

July 17, 2008

Q:
I need to check our ActiveFax archives. Need to find out if  someone deleted the files. The default is still set to 14 days and it worked fine for several months.

A:
If you know the date and time of the fax, you should be able to find the fax image file in the directory Program Files\ActiveFax\Server\Faxlist\yyyymmdd if the images have not been deleted. When starting the fax server with the option -Restore it would be possible to recreate the faxlist entries. To do so, stop the fax server and run ‘Program Files\ActiveFax\Server\ActFax.exe -Restore’ (your path can be different). Choose ‘Restore Faxlist from File’ or ‘Restore Faxlist from Directory’ from the File menu and select the fax or day you need to restore.

ActiveFax Error 1450

July 16, 2008

Q:
I am getting an error
Error Class: General Error Error Number: General Error 1450
Error Description: An error has occured while writing to this drive C:\ (C:\Program Files\Activefax\Server\Config\Counter.new).  To avoid loss of data you should quickly find out the reason for that error. Suggested Solution: Check whether there is enough disk space available on that drive, respectively you have write access to that drive. Now the directory exists but no file called Counter.new there is a dat file called counter but I am not sure that that is relevant.  There is also buckets of space on the machine.  Any thoughts?

A:
Error 1450 means “no system resources”, so I would recommend to make sure that enough disk space is available on the harddisk. If there is enough disk space available, it should help to one reboot the server PC.

area code

July 15, 2008

Q:
We have had ActiveFax for a few years.  It has now been  brought to my attention that we can not fax to area code 830.  Some  of these numbers in this area code are metro and some are long  distance.  We can receive from this area code with out any problems.  We have put a 1 before the area code when it is long distance and  it still will not fax out.  Please let me know what needs to be done  to fix this.

A:
Problem Description
Configure ActiveFax to use the same area code for local calls as well as for long distance calls.

Solution
Especially in the USA and Canada it is often required that numbers of a certain area code need to be dialed as local calls and also as long distance calls. Since ActiveFax strips the local area code for all numbers of the local area, a special configuration is required in that case. In the following sections you can find examples for such configurations.

Example 1:
Use the same area code for local calls as well as for long distance calls
Your local area code 311 is used for local calls as well as for long distance calls. All numbers that start with ‘311-1’, ‘311-2’ and ‘311-38’ should be dialed as long distance calls. All other numbers should be dialed as a normal local call:
Go to the menu Communication / Modem and enter the area code 311 in the field Area Code
Go to the menu Communication / Modem / Dialing Properties and enter the area code 311 in the field Additional Area Codes (ActiveFax dials the area code also for local calls in that case then)
Go to the menu Communication / Modem / Dialing Properties / Options / Dialing Rules and add the following dialing rules:
311-1??-???? should be dialed as 1-311-1??-????
311-2??-???? should be dialed as 1-311-2??-????
311-38?-???? should be dialed as 1-311-38?-????

Example 2: Use more than one local area code
The area codes 311, 312 and 318 all belong to your local area. ActFax should dial the full (10-digit) number for all numbers of these area codes (the area code is not stripped in that case):
Go to the menu Communication / Modem and enter the area code 311 in the field Area Code
Go to the menu Communication / Modem / Dialing Properties and enter the area code 311 in the field Additional Area Codes

ActiveFax Archiving

July 10, 2008

Q:
We are using v4.10 and have recently noticed that our AF Server stopped archiving incoming faxes on June 10.  Is there a log file or anyway of checking if those files were in fact accidently deleted by someone.

A:
By default, the fax server automatically moves faxes with status “Read” or “Sent” to the archive after 14 days. Faxes with a different status are not automatically moved to the archive. You can also check the settings for automatic archiving in the menu Extras / Options / Archive on the fax server.
