Modems speaker

October 24, 2008

Q:
We have active fax in our office, and the main part is installed onto my computer in the office. For a few months I wasn’t working in the office so I didn’t have a problem with it but the noise from the modem is TOO loud when faxes are being sent in. Is there anyway I can reduce it?

A:
The modems speaker can be disabled on the fax server with the menu Communication / Modem / Modify / Extended.

Error code 317

September 15, 2008

Q:
“general error 317” and description : “unknown eror 317” what is this? it gives the error when i connect my second same brand, same model (same with the working one) modem

A:
Error code 317 is a typical error with some modem types that have problems simultaneously running multiple modems at the same time. You can try to update the drivers for the modem or install the boards in a different PCI slot. If a driver update does not help, I’m afraid the only way to solve this is choosing different modems, since this error is caused by the modems driver and not under the control of ActiveFax. Using a multimodem board (i.e. from Eicon/Dialogic, Multitech or Mainpine) would be a good solution in that case.

Fax without modem or board

June 13, 2008

Q:
Is it necessary to have a modem using ActiveFax, I have a customer that  only wants to use ActiveFax to send emails ?

A:
The new ActiveFax Version 4.14 supports the Web Fax Service Venali. When using the Venali Web Fax Service, no modems or fax boards and no fax lines are needed on the fax server. It’s also possible to send E-mails instead of faxes.

Modem locked

April 2, 2008

Q:
My fax system keeps getting locked up when sending out a fax on one of my phone lines can you please help me and tell me what I can do to keep this from happening again. This has been happening several times a week and the only way I can get it from being locked up is shutting down my server but we have doc on our Terminal Service and I can not keep doing that.

A:
This sounds like a hardware or driver problem with the modem. Which modem are you using on that system? I would recommend to make sure that the latest drivers for the modem are installed and if possible, I would also recommend to replace the modem with a different model to see if this fixes the problem.

Fax Modem does not connect

January 31, 2008

Q:
Please help we have installed a new modem on the active fax and did a auto detection and it detected it but for some reason when we try to send a fax it keeps ringing and ringing it will not fax out and I checked the number and it is the correct number I have had this problem for 3 Days and can not figure it out please out. Can someone please help.

A:
I would recommend to enter the number of a normal phone in that case to see if the phone rings when the modem dials the number. If the phone does not ring, we should have a closer look at the phone cables. Many modems have two jacks to connect phone lines. Take care to connect the phone line to the “Line” jack in that case (not to the “Phone” jack). What you could also try is using a different cable to be sure the cable is not broken.

Transmission errors occur when sending faxes with an analog modem.

December 1, 2007

Transmission errors with analog modems are often caused by a bug in the modem software (firmware) or by a DSP (Digital Signal Processor) with poor signal processing. We recommend to only use quality modems for fax operation, since low-cost modems usually do not work very reliable in practice.

Problems with bugs in the modem firmware can usually be solved by running the modem in fax class 1 mode with the following settings. By running a modem in fax class 1 mode, the modem software is only doing basic operations and most parts of the fax transmission are controlled directly by ActiveFax in that case. We also recommend to use at least ActiveFax Version.

Recommended settings for analog modems with transmission problems
Menu Communication / Modem / Modify
Modem Type: Generic Class 1 Modem
Modem Class: 1
Menu Communikation / Modem / Modify / Port Settings
Baud Rate (bps): 57.600
Data Bits: 8
Parity: None
Stop Bits: 1
Flow Control: Hardware
Menu Communikation / Modem / Modify / Extended
MR-Compression (Modified Read): enabled
Error Correction Mode (ECM): enabled
Transfer Rates faster than 9.600 bps: enabled
