ActiveFax – Linux

December 1, 2007

Q:
I am trying to send faxes from a linux machine with suse 10.1 to activefax installed on a windows 2003 server. I have tried a samba directory and the LPD printing system. problem: the preview fax shows one hundred pages (even more) of text and rubish instead of the single page sent. do you know how to solve this? thank you very much.

A:
What kind of file do you send to the fax server in that case? You need to take care to send either PCL (Laserjet), Epson, plain text, Tiff (G3 or G4 format), Postscript or PDF files. When sending PDF or Postscript files it is also required to install Ghostscript on the fax server PC. Other file formats are not supported by the fax server and are treated as PCL data files, so you get that many pages with useless text in that case.

ActiveFax and SUSE

Q:
What I am sending to the acive fax printer is just any file through the printing system. I ahave installed avtivefax on an opensuse 10.2 machine as a remote LPD printer on a win2003 machine. I have tried a PostScrip printer, an Epson LQ, an HP Laserjet, and a directory in the win machine where I deposit files with the dat extension. when I check the activefax client jobs I see the the page I have printed becomes 103 pages of text!!!! I this happens no matter theprinter I choose. either a print from the browser, openoffice, no matter what… this is the header of a print order from firefox:
qoute
%PS Aobe 3.0
%Creator : xpdf/pdf t ops 3.0
%LanguageLevel 2
%DocumentSuplied resources (at end)

You need to take care to install Ghostscript on the fax server PC in that case:

To directly process Postscript and PDF files with ActFax for outgoing faxes (i.e. through automatic import from the file system or as a print job through LPD/LPR), the add-on software Ghostscript needs to be installed on the fax server. Ghostscript can be downloaded at the following link (file gs###w32.exe, ### = version number) from the Internet:

http://mirror.cs.wisc.edu/pub/mirrors/ghost/AFPL/current/

Please note that the fax server needs to be once stopped and restarted after Ghostscript has been installed.

If you can’t make it work that way, can you please send me such a file, so I can have a closer look on it.
