Fax Modem does not connect

January 31, 2008

Q:
Please help we have installed a new modem on the active fax and did a auto detection and it detected it but for some reason when we try to send a fax it keeps ringing and ringing it will not fax out and I checked the number and it is the correct number I have had this problem for 3 Days and can not figure it out please out. Can someone please help.

A:
I would recommend to enter the number of a normal phone in that case to see if the phone rings when the modem dials the number. If the phone does not ring, we should have a closer look at the phone cables. Many modems have two jacks to connect phone lines. Take care to connect the phone line to the “Line” jack in that case (not to the “Phone” jack). What you could also try is using a different cable to be sure the cable is not broken.

AOPEN fm56-sw modem

January 29, 2008

Q:
I have a AOPEN fm56-sw modem and cannot fax out of it can you please help me?

A:
Can you please check which error message you get in the menu Extras / Transmission Protocol in that case. I would recommend to also check the number dialed by the modem. This can also be done in the menu Extras / Transmission Protocol when you scroll to the right to the field ‘Dialed Number’ there. This field shows the fax number exactly as dialed by the modem.

ActiveFax is down …

January 28, 2008

Q:
Please help us we have faxes that keep getting stuck and also our fax system is down. We can not receive or send out any faxes through any workstation or server. Do you know what I can do?

A:
It would be interesting to see which error code you get in the menu Extras / Transmission Protocol in that case. Then I would recommend to also check which fax number the modem dialed. You can check this with the menu Extras / Transmission Protocol when you scroll to the right to the column “Dialed Number” there. This field shows the fax number exactly as dialed by the modem. If you need a special digit to get an outside line (normally 9), take care that this is also dialed by the modem. In general, I would recommend using the modem settings as follows:

* Menu Communication / Modem / Modify
o Modem Type: Generic Class 1 Modem
o Modem Class: 1
* Menu Communication / Modem / Modify / Port Settings
o Baud Rate (bps): 57.600
o Data Bits: 8
o Parity: None
o Stop Bits: 1
o Flow Control: Hardware
* Menu Communication / Modem / Modify / Extended
o MR-Compression (Modified Read): enabled
o MMR-Compression (Modified-Modified Read): enabled
o Error Correction Mode (ECM): enabled
o Transfer Rates faster than 9.600 bps: enabled

ActiveFax Connection Problem

January 23, 2008

Q:
My ActiveFax server is up but no one can connect. It is saying it can not connect to the network. But it was working just fine yesterday. Please help us. The ActiveFax server is working fine and the client version is all working fine on the server but none of the work stations client are working. We pinged the ip address from the server and it said that we were connected properly. Please help no one but the server can get into ActiveFax.

A:
Sounds like a firewall problem, so you should make sure that the ports 25017, 25018 and 25019 are not blocked by a firewall for TCP and UDP protocol. For testing you might also try to temporary disable any firewalls and antivirus programs to see if this is the reason for the blocked connection. Take care to check this on the server and also on the client PC.

Modems and Caller ID

January 23, 2008

Q:
Hello..
finally, thanks also your solicitous support, i’ve more than an year ActiveFax Working with more than 14000 fax (not pages) received… I switched to Brooktrouth TR114 Board 8 months ago.. but still have one problem. I “need” to record the id-number of the sender of a fax, for security purposes, but the TR114 does not provide this services … US robotics modem, is not really reliable, sometimes it remain on hook with some type of fax machine … I tried with different robotics modem.. but ever the same …

So I’m here to ask you an advice to wich modem to buy, analog or isdn, that could be reliable, economic and with the caller Id working … I could use this modem on 2 lines to receive fax and the tr144 to send … Thanks in advance. Michele

A:
The Multitech MT5634ZBA-V92 would be a good choice in that case (see http://www.multitech.com/PRODUCTS/Families/MultiModemZBA/ ).

Digital Sender 9100C

January 14, 2008

Q:
I’ve been tossed into a sink-or-swim situation, and I’m hoping someone can help. The setup is ActiveFAX 4.05 on Windows 2000 server. I’m trying to get an HP Digital Sender to talk to it for sending hardcopy FAXes, and I don’t seem to be having any luck. I’m sure it’s something that I’ll look back at later, and go ‘Wow, that was simple,’ but at the moment I’m gaining more gray hairs than I need. The ActiveFAX manual is not very helpful on this topic. It merely gives the directory where the program expects to receive scanned hardcopy. What I really could use is a step-by-step to getting the 9100C talking to the program, ideally from someone who’s already gone through this.

A:
On the fax server you just need to configure the directory for data exchange in the menu Communication / Scanner. It is important to also configure the digital sender service to automatically export the scanned documents to that directory. The file format needs to be PCL5 packbits.

(it’s in German language, but it looks identical in English).
