EMail subject and attachment names

July 21, 2008

Q:
We use your Active Fax software with  several of our clients.  I am wondering,  how can I change the  subject-name and attachment-name of outbound emails sent from Active Fax?

A:
The attachment name can be changed either in the menu Communication / E-Mail / Options or with the data field @F602. The subject can be changed directly in the fax dialog window through the Subject field or with the data field @F307.

Automatic setup for clients

July 17, 2008

Q:
I have been using ActiveFax for a long time now, and it gives me great joy every day. But it is a bit of a job of keaping the clients up to date. Is it possible to create an MSI installation package of the ActiveFax Client?

A:
An MSI setup is currently not available, but it would be possible to run the setup with command line parameters to automatically install the fax client:

To automatically run the ActiveFax Setup unattended it would be possible to start the setup  program with command line parameters. A list of all available command line parameters can be displayed with the command actfax_setup_en.exe -help. For example to automatically install the fax client without automatic startup, use the following command:

* actfax_setup_en.exe -Auto -Client -NoStartup

To automatically install the fax server, use a command like the following:

* actfax_setup_en.exe -Auto -Server -Key 00000-00000

If you are using an ActiveFax version older than version 4.10, you first have to open the setup file actfax_setup_en.exe with Winzip and extract the setup files to a new directory (the file actfax_setup_en.exe can be treated like a normal ZIP file). To run the setup with command line parameters, start setup.exe from the extracted directory instead of actfax_setup_en.exe then.

COM3 as default port for ActiveFax

June 8, 2008

Q:
In the properties of the fax/email, when it’s asking for modem, the default is always Next Available. How do I default this to COM3?

A:
If you are using the latest ActiveFax version 4.14, this would be possible when you write the data field text @F312 COM03@ to the Location or Comment field of the ActiveFax printer in the Windows Control Panel. Data fields written to the Location or Comment field are automatically used as default data fields by the ActiveFax printer. With the data field @F312 it is possible to set the default modem.

USB Modem

June 2, 2008

Q:
We have bought a Diamond SupraMax USB modem to use with ActiveFax. How do we install a USB modem when there is not a option for USB there is just COM Ports? Are we just stuck with a RS-232 connection?

A:
When you install the drivers for the USB modem, there is also a COM port assigned to the modem (normally COM3 or COM4). This COM port can then be used to access the modem.

ActiveFax – sending PDF documents

May 25, 2008

Q:
Is there a way to email PDF documents directly out of ActiveFax?

A:
To directly process Postscript and PDF files with ActiveFax for outgoing faxes (i.e. through automatic import from the file system or as a print job through LPD/LPR), the add-on software Ghostscript needs to be installed on the fax server. Ghostscript can be downloaded at the following link (file gs###w32.exe, ### = version number) from the Internet:

http://mirror.cs.wisc.edu/pub/mirrors/ghost/AFPL/current/

Please note that the fax server needs to be once stopped and restarted after Ghostscript has been installed.

ActiveFax – clean up wrong fax numbers

May 25, 2008

Q:
How do we “clean up” the wrong fax numbers in the ActiveFax phone book? We correct fax numbers and still, the wrong ones  always come back in the ActiveFax phone book, any ideas?

A:
Do you change the fax number directly in the phone book or do you just change the fax list entry? It is important to change the fax numbers directly in the phone book in that case. If the phone book entries are automatically imported from a database table through ODBC or from a file, you need to take care to also change the fax number in the original data source.

ImageRunner 1023iF

April 16, 2008

Q:
How does ActiveFax work with ImageRunner 1023iF?

A:
In general, it would be possible to automatically process PDF files placed in a predefined directory. This can be configured with the menu Communciation / File System on the fax server. The built-in fax board of the ImageRunner 1023iF can however not be used to send/receive faxes directly through ActiveFax, since there is no interface integrated in the ImageRunner to connect the integrated fax board with 3rd party fax software, so you need a separate fax modem or fax board on the fax server.

Storage/file type

April 4, 2008

Q:
Where are the faxes stored on the computer? I want to make sure the images are backed up every day. I did not see any .bmp files, so I assume that it is a different file type … ?

A:
Yes, the fax image files are stored in an internal format (not .bmp) at Program Files\ActiveFax\Server\Faxlist. Regarding backups, I would recommend to make a complete backup of the Program Files\ActiveFax directory on the fax server ( see http://www.activefax-distribution.com/afewbb/thread.php?threadid=3&sid= )
