64bit printer Driver

June 16, 2009

Q:
We are installing two new Terminal Servers(2008 x64bit). Right now ActiveFax is running WinXP Pro (x32bit)on a separate pc using a standard modem with a generic driver. I need to load a x64bit print driver so they can print to the activefax printer. Is there a x64bit driver available? I see that there is a “ActiveFax Program Files 64-bit(Fresh Installation and Update)” but if a x64bit driver is available that would be great. Hate to have to put it on a x64bit machine as a fresh install…

A:
The printer driver is installed directly with the setup routine, so you just need to run the setup of the 64-bit version to install the 64-bit printer driver.

Printing / Terminal Server

May 21, 2009

Q:
When we try to print a document from another terminal calling upon the activefax printer the document does not get transmitted, rather it appears as a hung job in the activefax printer, and we have to reboot the server to clear the job.

A:
You need to take care to enable the option for terminal server extensions on the fax client in the menu File / Automatic Startup / Terminal Server in that case. Take care to once log off from Windows when you change that option. When this option is not set, you normally get the fax dialog window for the print job directly on the console screen of the terminal server which then blocks the spooler as long as the window is open.

Q:
Does the activefax server and client have to be installed on each PC that needs to activefax?

A:
On normal workstations, you just need to install the fax client. The fax server is only installed on a single PC in the network.

Route faxes to different printers

May 14, 2009

Q:
If we have more than one modem in a single Server,  Is it possible to route faxes coming in from each modem/faxline – to be outputted to *different* printers, so that we do not confuse our faxing systems?

A:
Yes, this would be no problem. You just need to assign a different default user for each modem in the menu Communication / Modem / Modify and can then configure individual printer settings for each of these users with the menu Extras / User Administrator / Modify / Printing.

Margins

April 14, 2009

Q:
We are experiencing some inconsistencies with margins dependent upon the client the report is sent to. The majority of these print out correctly. The margins are currently set universally for 10 mm’s left, right, top & bottom. Are there any known issues with margin settings not being honored in all instances?

A:
When using the ActiveFax printer, the margin is normally set directly by the application. Since the ActiveFax printer does not have a non-printable area, it would be possible to set the top and left margin also to 0.

Q:
I may have describe the issue incorrectly. These are faxes sent by ActiveFax. They are not being printed by ActiveFax.

A:
But you print the document to be faxed to the ActiveFax printer, correct? In that case, the margin is normally set directly in the application creating the print job for the ActiveFax printer (i.e. in Winword).

It would also be possible to configure an additional margin for faxes sent by ActiveFax with the menu Extras / Options / Modem on the fax server.

Crystal Reports

March 23, 2009

crystalreports

Q:
We intend to use ActiveFax with Crystal Reports (ver 9, 10 ,11). Is it possible? How does it work?

A:
Sending faxes from Crystal Reports with ActiveFax would be possible. You just need to print the report directly to the ActiveFax printer in that case. The recipients fax number and other data can be set directly in the report with data fields to automatically send such reports.

Nextgen EMR

January 24, 2009

screenshot
Q:
I am trying to use data fields inside of Nextgen EMR which uses it’s own file format .NGN which I believe is based on RTF. It seems that the Activefax printer must be the default in order to keep the AF font inside these documents. Any other ideas? I guess I am going to try to move on to using the fileserver feature of Active fax and see if I can get that working. I do not have a lot of control over the Nextgen Document system.

A:
The ActiveFax printer does not need to be the system default printer, but since the ActiveFax font is a printer internal font, most applications only show such fonts when the active printer is the ActiveFax printer. As an alternative it would also be possible to use data fields as part of the document name when EMR uses the document name for the print job name in the printer spooler. To process documents directly through the file system, it is important to use a file format that can be directly processed by the fax server (HP Laserjet, Epson, Tiff G3 + G4, Postscript and PDF).

Crystal Reports – ActiveFax Font

January 5, 2009

Q:
I have created a crystal report with the active fax font integrated while the Active fax printer was set to the default. When I change the default printer to my laser the active fax font remains in the crystal report and everything is good. How then can I create another type of document i.e. word, pdf, etc. that will also retain the active fax font? This is such a great product with this one exception. I can not created a fully automated system for my doctor’s offices without this feature. Please help.

A:
It would also be possible to use data fields in other document types (i.e. Winword). You can even format the data fields in white color, so the data fields are not visible when you print the document on a normal Laserjet printer. As an alternative it would also be possible to use data fields as part of the document name instead of adding them directly to the document.

ActiveFax Printing problems / incomplete pages

September 25, 2008

Q:
I have Active Fax installed at one of my clients’ sites. We have Active Fax set as a print-to-fax report destination within our own interfaced software.

When a user prints a report (any report) to the “Fax” destination, Active Fax receives the document beautifully. I can go into the Active Fax Client and view the document, and it is exactly as it
should be. However, the document that is printed out on the appropriate fax machine is either blank, or contains only the first centimeter or so of the top of the document. Active Fax views this
as a failed fax, and retries (usually up to 7 additional times).

I have tried setting the timeout settings under Communication / Active Fax Server to 999, but this does not help. Would you please help me? Thank you in advance for your assistance in this matter.

A:
This sounds like a problem with the printer driver (especially when using a HP Laserjet printer), so I would recommend to update to the latest driver for that printer. Printing with a lower resolution could also help in that case.

Q:
Does this apply when printing to a fax as well? Our client does not print their faxes to a printer, rather they come directly through the fax machine.

A:
I first thought you have that problem when printing such documents to a local printer. If you have the problem when the fax is received by the remote fax machine, this rather sounds like a problem with the phone line or the modems signal processor. I would recommend using the modem settings as follows:

Recommended settings for analog modems with transmission problems

* Menu Communication / Modem / Modify
o Modem Type: Generic Class 1 Modem
o Modem Class: 1
* Menu Communication / Modem / Modify / Port Settings
o Baud Rate (bps): 57.600
o Data Bits: 8
o Parity: None
o Stop Bits: 1
o Flow Control: Hardware
* Menu Communication / Modem / Modify / Extended
o MR-Compression (Modified Read): enabled
o Error Correction Mode (ECM): enabled
o Transfer Rates faster than 9.600 bps: enabled

When using these settings, error correction mode is used, which helps to detect such corrupted fax transmissions (i.e. caused by line noise).

If you get that error more often or when it does not work with the next attempts, I would recommend to make sure that the phone line is ok or trying with a different modem/board.

Text problems

June 20, 2008

Q:
We have Activefax 4.05 set up to send faxes from our database.  In our testing we have noticed that when we send a fax from our database the output fax received contains text that is overlayed.  For example, the text on line 6 is overlapped by the text on line 7.  This is completely random and occurs once or twice on every page.

A:
Please change the resolution of the ActiveFax printer from 200 dpi to 300 or 600 dpi
