Q:
When sending faxes connection error occured. Code 28 = RSPREC invalid response received. I have tried it with 2 different modems but still the same error.Please advise.
A:
This sounds like a problem with the modems signal processor or with the fax line (i.e. caused by line noise). If you already changed the modem to a modem of a different brand, the modem normally shouldn’t be the reason for the problem.
I recommend using the modem settings as follows:
* Menu Communication / Modem / Modify
o Modem Type: Generic Class 1 Modem
o Modem Class: 1
* Menu Communication / Modem / Modify / Port Settings
o Baud Rate (bps): 57.600
o Data Bits: 8
o Parity: None
o Stop Bits: 1
o Flow Control: Hardware
* Menu Communication / Modem / Modify / Extended
o MR-Compression (Modified Read): enabled
o Error Correction Mode (ECM): enabled
o Transfer Rates faster than 9.600 bps: enabled
You also need to take care that the options ‘Enable incoming calls (Receive)’ and ‘Answer incoming calls after x rings’ are enabled in the menu Communication / Modem / Modify. If the calls are still not answered, you should also enable the option ‘Answer calls for all MSN’ in the menu Communication / Modem / Modify / Port Settings. This option should however only be enabled, when there are no other devices connected to the same ISDN line.
If it does not work with these settings, I would recommend to make sure that the phone line is ok or trying a modem of a different brand. Limiting the baud rate to 9,600 bps in the menu Communication / Modem / Modify / Extended could also help.

Q:
I am using Dell Data Fax Modem. System is Dell 270 and Windows XP. I cannot receive or send faxes. What is wrong?
A:
Have you already tried to dial the number of the modem with a normal phone to see if the modem rings and if the call is answered by the modem? What you should also make sure is that the options “Enable incoming calls (Receive)” and “Answer incoming calls after x rings” are enabled in the menu Communication / Modem / Modify on the fax server.

Is it possible to arrange ActiveFax in order to insert automatically a pre-selection code of different telephone companies, before the area code of contacts in the phone book? Thank you
A:
If you always need to dial the same codes, this can be configured with the menu Communication / Modem / Dialing Properties / Options / Billing Codes. If you need to dial individual codes, it would be possible to configure this with the menu Communication / Modem / Least Cost Routing.

Q:
There is an ID-Number in the field mapping section (Phonebooks tab of the ODBC screen). It appears maybe when the software checks for duplicates, it matches either on that ID OR on the Name and Fax fields. Is that correct? Also, we mapped the ID-number to an alphanumeric customer ID in another system. It appeared that nothing came in to that field because it is a numeric field. However, we did end up with the correct number of records. Is there any problem if that field is blank?
A:
Yes, that’s correct, when the ID number is mapped, the fax server only checks this field for existing phone book entries. When the ID number field is not mapped, it checks the fields Name 1, Fax Number and
Attention Of for existing phone book entries. Take care that the ID number field always needs to be numeric, so mapping that field to an alphanumeric database field does not work.
Q:
Just to confirm, is it ok not to map the ID field then?
A:
Yes, it would also work to leave the ID Number field unmapped. The fax server checks the fields Name 1, Fax Number and Attention Of to find existing phone book entries in that case then.

Q:
Hi, we use our activefax for outgoing faxes only. Since the phone line it is connected to accepts phone calls, I want to stop the active fax from picking up incoming calls. I have gone into the modem properties and unchecked the box to stop picking up incoming calls with no results.
A:
When you go to the menu Communication / Modem / Modify and disable the option “Enable incoming calls (Receive)” there, incoming calls are no longer answered by the modem. If incoming calls are still answered, I recommend to make sure that there is no other application running that might pick up the call.

We are looking at ActiveFax for our faxing needs. I am the in-house developer and I would like to know if there is a list of all the APIs for ActiveFax?
A:
There is no special API for ActiveFax. Faxes are normally automatically created by adding data fields directly to the document. You can find a complete list of all data fields in the online help of the fax server or in the users manual in the chapter “Data Fields”. An example for data fields can also be found in the Word document at
Program Files\ActiveFax\Server\Sample.doc.

Q:
I am wondering if there is a way of programmaticlly tracking a fax. I need to be able to know when a fax was received by the fax server, what state the fax is in, when the fax was transmitted etc.
A:
I recommend to automatically export the transmission protocol in that case. The transmission protocol can be exported either to a file with the menu Extras / Transmission Protocol / Options or directly to a database table through ODBC with the menu Communication / ODBC Database. As an alternative, it would also be possible to export the faxlist to a text file for further processing. This can be configured on the fax server with the menu Faxlist / Export Faxlist.
