How many Brooktrout TR1034 boards can you support

September 30, 2008

Q:
How many Brooktrout TR1034 boards can you support in a machine ? How many simultaneous faxes can you send at a time, I plan to have 4 1034 boards (96 channels)?

A:
In general the number of channels channels supported by the fax server is not limited, but for performance reasons I would strongly recommend to not use more than two TR1034-T1 boards (2  x 24 channels) in a single server. It would be better to use two servers with two T1 boards each in that case.

ActiveFax Printing problems / incomplete pages

September 25, 2008

Q:
I have Active Fax installed at one of my clients’ sites. We have Active Fax set as a print-to-fax report destination within our own interfaced software.

When a user prints a report (any report) to the “Fax” destination, Active Fax receives the document beautifully. I can go into the Active Fax Client and view the document, and it is exactly as it
should be. However, the document that is printed out on the appropriate fax machine is either blank, or contains only the first centimeter or so of the top of the document. Active Fax views this
as a failed fax, and retries (usually up to 7 additional times).

I have tried setting the timeout settings under Communication / Active Fax Server to 999, but this does not help. Would you please help me? Thank you in advance for your assistance in this matter.

A:
This sounds like a problem with the printer driver (especially when using a HP Laserjet printer), so I would recommend to update to the latest driver for that printer. Printing with a lower resolution could also help in that case.

Q:
Does this apply when printing to a fax as well? Our client does not print their faxes to a printer, rather they come directly through the fax machine.

A:
I first thought you have that problem when printing such documents to a local printer. If you have the problem when the fax is received by the remote fax machine, this rather sounds like a problem with the phone line or the modems signal processor. I would recommend using the modem settings as follows:

Recommended settings for analog modems with transmission problems

* Menu Communication / Modem / Modify
o Modem Type: Generic Class 1 Modem
o Modem Class: 1
* Menu Communication / Modem / Modify / Port Settings
o Baud Rate (bps): 57.600
o Data Bits: 8
o Parity: None
o Stop Bits: 1
o Flow Control: Hardware
* Menu Communication / Modem / Modify / Extended
o MR-Compression (Modified Read): enabled
o Error Correction Mode (ECM): enabled
o Transfer Rates faster than 9.600 bps: enabled

When using these settings, error correction mode is used, which helps to detect such corrupted fax transmissions (i.e. caused by line noise).

If you get that error more often or when it does not work with the next attempts, I would recommend to make sure that the phone line is ok or trying with a different modem/board.

ActiveFax for Linux

September 18, 2008

Q:
I’d like to use Activefax on Linux, do you have a Linux version?

A:
ActiveFax always needs a Windows server but clients can be Linux driven. There is no special Linux version available.

Error code 317

September 15, 2008

Q:
“general error 317″ and description : “unknown eror 317″ what is this? it gives the error when i connect my second same brand, same model (same with the working one) modem

A:
Error code 317 is a typical error with some modem types that have problems simultaneously running multiple modems at the same time. You can try to update the drivers for the modem or install the boards in a different PCI slot. If a driver update does not help, I’m afraid the only way to solve this is choosing different modems, since this error is caused by the modems driver and not under the control of ActiveFax. Using a multimodem board (i.e. from Eicon/Dialogic, Multitech or Mainpine) would be a good solution in that case.

Incoming faxes to store in a DMS

September 15, 2008

Q:
My question is about the incoming faxes. Is there a way (or event)  that I can use to store incoming faxes automatically  in a directory based on incoming parameters ? I saw that forwarding to a  printer could be possible. Could it also be forwarding to a file  (without user interaction) and then collect fax properties from the  database (though API or ODBC ?)

A:
It would be possible to automatically export received files. This can be configured with the menu Extras / Options / Archive. The fax parameters can also be automatically exported to a database table through ODBC (see menu Communication / ODBC Database on the fax server).

Partially fax forward by email

September 10, 2008

Q:
I run a network, with a domain and everything, with many users & groups. I have about 25 users using Active Fax, all of them needs to see all incoming faxes by ActiveFax clients, which they do.

Now there are 6 new users I DON’T want them to have the client, but I do want them to receive faxes by email ONLY. I added a different modem for that (com3)with a different phone line. I wanted to test your instructions, so I went to extras–> user administrator and created my own user, configured to receive fax by mail.
On communications menu -> Email I defined the exchange server address (just an exampled address). When I try to fax the new modem’s number (by a fax machine) my user does not receive it by mail at all. I do see it at all the other 25 users that have Active Fax client. What did I do wrong?

A:
You need to take care to also assign that new user to the modem on COM3 in the menu Communication / Modem / Modify, so when you set the default user for that modem to (user), new faxes received on that modem are automatically routed to the user and then automatically forwarded by email.

No carrier error

September 10, 2008

Q:
We get a no carrier error for all outgoing faxes.

A:
You normally get the NO CARRIER error when the call is not answered by a fax machine, so this could be a problem with the number dialed by the modem. You can check which number the modem dialed with the menu Extras / Transmission Protocol when you scroll to the right to the column Dialed Number there. This field shows the fax number exactly as dialed by the modem. If you need to dial a special access code to get an outside line, take care that this access code is also dialed.

Fax to Email

September 10, 2008

Q:
We have a problem: The server ActiveFax what we have configured to send mail for all incoming fax, but we noticed that the faxes that contain more than 10 pages not sent by mail. Do you know what may be the problem? Thank you.

A:
On the fax server there is no limitation for the number of pages or the size of an email. This rather sounds like a limitation of the mail server (i.e. that does not allow mails with attachments larger than 1 MB to be sent). If you are using an internal mail server, I would recommend to check if there are such limitations. For testing you can also try to temporary reduce the resolution for email attachments to 100 dpi in the menu Communication / E-Mail / Options, so the attachment files will be smaller.

Lost Faxes

September 8, 2008

Q:
Looks like we have lost some sent and received fax entries (but nobody deleted the faxes). What can we do to get it back?

A:
Seems that the index file for the faxlist got damaged. It would be possible to rebuild the index for missing faxes when you start the fax server with the option -Restore. To do so, stop the fax server and then run ‘Program Files\ActiveFax\Server\ActFax.exe -Restore’ (your path can be different).
Choose ‘Restore Faxlist from Directory’ from the File menu then and select the faxes you need to restore. I would also recommend to do a complete scandisk to be sure that the harddisk and file system are ok.
